Calculator methodology
These calculations serve as indicators of the scale of these corporations’ livestock-related emissions. Precise estimates of corporate emissions can only be achieved through full disclosure and third-party independent verification of company data, including the number of animals in their global operations. The aim of this website is to highlight the magnitude of their emissions and the urgency for action.
Information on how the company emissions data are calculated can be viewed here: https://www.iatp.org/sites/default/files/2022-11/Emissions%20Impossible_Methane%20Edition_Annexes%201%20and%202.pdf.
These emissions calculations were presented in the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP) and Changing Markets Foundation report, Emissions Impossible: Methane Edition. The primary dataset that underpins these calculations can be found here: https://iatp.sharepoint.com/:x:/s/ProgramsProjects/EZ3DYZ4CHhtGncxU1wGCZ0QB3y4EoaeNhEprTEsjXAo9XA?e=3Fgnve
The comparison figures for coal plants and cars have been calculated using the EPA Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator: https://www.epa.gov/energy/greenhouse-gas-equivalencies-calculator
